Jaw Pain & TMJ

Are you experiencing jaw pain, locking, clicking, clenching, and/or grinding? A quick and relatively painless neuromodular treatment (Botox®) in the muscles responsible for clenching can help to relieve your symptoms for 3-6 months.

By injecting small doses of Botox® directly into the masseter muscle (the large muscle that moves the jaw), the muscle is weakened enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. This significantly relaxes the muscle and reduces the wear and tear on the teeth due to grinding.

We’ll work together to determine the number of injections you’ll benefit from.

Typically, clients receive 2-3 injections per side. Most of our patients report very little discomfort from these injections. A cold ice pack after treatment will usually feel good. You can return to your regular daily activities as soon as you leave the office but avoid rubbing or massaging your face for a few hours.

You’ll begin to feel some improvements within a day or two of treatment, but more often it takes several days before you’ll really start to notice a big difference. That’s it! It’s really quite simple and the treatment will last about 3-4 months.

What are the Potential Side effects of Botox® for jaw pain and TMJ? Side effects of this treatment are most often relatively minimal. You may experience some mild bruising and or discomfort for a few days. Your jaw may feel tired when chewing tough foods for a week or two as the Botox® settles in but this will resolve completely. Temporary relaxation of adjacent muscles may occur. For example, the muscles responsible for smiling can on occasion be affected for a few days to weeks but will resolve completely.
